Since 1999, LBA-ECO science teams have been training over 500 students and been involved in transferring of appropriate technological skills and capacity building in collaboration with graduate programs in Brazilian and South American institutions through a variety of initiatives. Grants have been awarded for Brazilian and South American students to pursue Masters and Doctoral degrees in US universities including participation in seminars, short courses, and international conferences. LBA-ECO has also provided infra-structure and financial support for a large number of scientific related activities for capability enhancement and dissemination of science in collaboration with the LBA Training and Education Committee, LBA Central Office and partner institutions.

Student Participation
LBA-ECO has been making major contributions in strengthening advanced education in Brazil by providing substantial grants for advanced students. According to the 2004 LBA Training and Education report, LBA-ECO has awarded 70% of the overall LBA Ph.D scholarships and 23% of the LBA Masters scholarships for Brazilian students.

Distribution of LBA Masters Students by Funding Agencies

Currently, LBA-ECO is continuing its focus on advanced training - Ph.D and post-doctoral - and to track Masters and state-of-the-art technical training, since a considerable number of Undergraduate students receive grants from CNPq.

- T & E Sector in Santarém, Pará, Brazil
With LBA-ECO concentrating most of its research activities in Santarém, Pará, having 42 science teams working in the region since 1999, there was a large number of students participating in LBA-ECO research. This growing student community necessitated additional facilities and support for training.
In 2002, the LBA Project Office coordinated with the LBA Operations Manager in Brazil the installation of the the LBA Training and Education Setor (T & E Sector) in order to create a working environment for academic discussions and improvement of interactions among the various LBA groups of students and researchers.
The T & E Sector provided infra-structure and personnel to support the organization of seminars, lectures, short courses, working groups, and a number of academic related activities involving LBA researchers and students, as well as faculty and students from local universities. Activities are planned according to their research studies and complementary courses are also provided to improve their capabilities to pursue higher degrees in science education.
On a regular basis, working groups from various science teams were organized for discussions of research studies, creating a stimulating environment for students to develop and improve their:
- Scientific knowledge by interacting with participants from different scientific research teams;
- Oral and written scientific communication skills;
- Leadership skills;
- Capacity to synthesize discussions in groups
In 2005, the LBA T & E Sector facilities were transferred to the Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) campus as a permanent contribution of LBA and LBA-ECO to the community of students, teachers and educators in the Santarém region. LBA-ECO provided financial and technical support for the complete restoration of an existing building at UFPA campus which received the T & E Sector facilities.
The T & E Setor on UFPA campus has also been utilized as an additional resource for students engaged in the new Masters Program in Environmental Physics recently initiated at UFPA as a result of the cooperative interaction between LBA and UFPA.
